1967: A Timeless Lounge Experience in Tokyo

Yasumichi Morita's Design Transforms Busy Roppongi into a Tranquil Oasis

The 1967 lounge is not your typical bar. It is a stylish sanctuary where visitors can unwind in an environment reminiscent of a chic friend's salon, complete with a large garden lounge. Surrounded by lush greenery, guests can easily forget they are in one of Tokyo's busiest streets. The lounge's interior is equally impressive, featuring a gorgeous and chic counter lounge, an I counter, and cool music that enhances the overall ambiance.

What sets 1967 apart is its unique blend of art and architecture. Each of the lounge's four private rooms features works from artists inspired by the 1960s, transforming the space into a luxurious art gallery. The lounge also boasts a variety of scenes within a limited space, catering to the diverse needs of its guests. Eighty percent of the space is dedicated to guest seating in the garden until 9 PM. As the night progresses, a shutter opens to reveal a completely different, luxurious space that adds a new dimension to the entertainment area.

The realization of 1967's design involved a range of materials and technologies. The corridor and bar counter floors are made of china tile by Dinaone, while the terraced area features arabescato stairs and a tile carpet sofa area by Toli. The walls in the corridor and private rooms are adorned with vinyl cloth by Sangetsu and wall curtains by Kimi Corporation. The lighting, provided by Maxray, adds to the lounge's chic and sophisticated atmosphere.

Despite the design challenges associated with periodic tenancy, the team managed to limit the budget and recoup investment costs in a short term. The floors and terraced area were separated, and bottles of champagne and wine were placed in a cooler connected to a table, enticing guests. The middle counter also encourages guests to enjoy their drinks while standing.

Since its opening in April 2013, the 1967 lounge has become a popular destination in Roppongi. The lounge's unique design and tranquil atmosphere offer a refreshing contrast to the busy streets of Tokyo. The project's success is evident in its receipt of the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2014, a testament to the design's outstanding and trendsetting qualities.
